Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) displays a pattern of
social anxiety, social inhibition, feelings of inferior, extreme sensitive to
negative evaluation and rejection, and avoidance to interaction of intimacy.
[1] Avoidant personality disorder can be misunderstanding as being “shy” for
the public. In fact, the symptom of AvPD can be described as “shy”, but the
deeper reasons of it are low self-esteem and strong self-doubt.
AvPD is a rare psychological problem which has fewer than
200,000 cases per year in U.S. [2] Here are some symptoms of AvPD:
·
Avoid
occupational activities: People who have AvPD has fear of criticism,
disapproval, or rejection by interacting with others significantly.
·
Is
unwilling to interact with people: They tend to avoid interacting with
others in daily life unless they have the certainty of being liked.
·
Low
self-esteem: They feel inferior in front of others and they will have more
self- doubt when they are criticized.
·
Reluctant
to take personal risks: They are unwilling to engage into new activities
because of the fear of being embarrassed.
For avoidant personality disorder, there are treatments can
help but the condition can’t be cured. The treatment is designed by a mental
health professional and it will likely include talk therapy. If there is a
co-existing condition, such as depression or anxiety disorder, appropriate
medications may also be applied. [3]
